Generate your own 3D asset packs with Masterpiece X Generate API

Kitbashing has long been a favorite technique for 3D creators looking to quickly prototype or build immersive scenes. With the power of the Masterpiece X API, creating custom asset kits has never been easier. In this post, I’ll walk you through a workflow that transforms a few images into a fully usable kit of 3D assets.

There are thousands of ways to string together workflows.  If you are inspired to learn more reach out and sign-up for our newsletter. Alright, let’s dive into the process.

Step 1: Starting with Images

Every great asset kit begins with inspiration. Whether you have a single image or a series of visuals, these references lay the groundwork for the kitbashing workflow.

For example, if your goal is to create a cartoony cozy log house surrounded by a quaint garden, you might choose images of log houses, vegetable gardens, and a variety of trees. These references don’t define the style or technical details yet—they simply provide a clear vision of what you want to build.

With your reference images ready, the next step is to identify the objects that will make up your custom asset kit.

Step 2: Generating an Object List

Next, the images are sent to a vision model. This AI analyzes the content of the reference images and generates a detailed object list. In our cozy log house example, the list might include log house, tree, fence, carrots, and so on.

OpenAI’s vision model produces a list of objects along with their descriptions.

Step 3: Defining the Style

Consistency in style is crucial when kitbashing. To ensure the assets fit together, I created a 3D cartoon style guide. This guide describes a whimsical, exaggerated aesthetic with bright colors and playful shapes—perfect for a cartoony, vibrant world.

Simplified Cartoony is a playful and exaggerated 3D art style that focuses on bold, easily recognizable shapes and expressive designs. Environments often have exaggerated proportions to enhance emotions and make them visually appealing. Shapes are simplified with rounded forms, avoiding complexity or sharp angles, featuring simple geometric shapes for structures and rounded. Colors are bright, saturated, and rely on primary and secondary hues, with minimal gradients or muted tones. Textures are flat and smooth, with little to no visible detail, maintaining clarity and accessibility. This style is ideal for creating lighthearted, fun, and approachable visuals, particularly for family-friendly projects or whimsical storytelling.

Step 4: Crafting Image Prompts for Objects

The object list and style guide are combined to create image prompts for each item. These prompts are then sent to a 3rd-party AI, which generates stylized images for each object.

Step 5: Converting Images into 3D Assets

Here’s where the magic happens. The images of the objects are processed by the Masterpiece X API, which transforms them into high-quality 3D assets. The result? A collection of GLB files—a fully custom asset kit ready to use.
